Holy Comforter Episcopal Church to Host 4th Annual Alternative Gift Fair

From Bobby Monacella of the Holy Comforter Alternative Gift Fair:

Vienna, VA – On December 4 and 5, Northern Virginians can make their holiday gift buying more meaningful and unique by shopping at Holy Comforter's Alternative Gift Fair. The holiday market this year will be supported by a new vendor, Fair Trade Winds, an exclusively fair trade retail store in Fairfax City, VA. Fair Trade Winds will bring a new look to the fair, with a huge inventory and hard-to-find artisans’ handcrafts from countries all over the world. The Alternative Gift Fair will take place from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and 9 am to 1 pm on Sunday.

“We are pleased to offer a variety of unique, handcrafted gifts from artisans all over the world at the Alternative Gift Fair at Holy Comforter,” says Paul Culler, owner of Fair Trade Winds. In light of the human tragedies and devastation in Haiti, Pakistan, Guatemala, Indonesia, India, Afghanistan, and the Philippines this year, the store’s owners are especially humbled to have products for sale made by the talented craftspeople in those countries. “Your purchases will directly help to rebuild their lives, reinvigorate their communities, and renew faith in their abilities,” says Culler.

In addition, this unique event will offer opportunities to donate gifts like livestock, mosquito nets or micro-loans in the name of the donor’s recipient. Aid organizations Heifer International, Episcopal Relief and Development and 5 Talents International will have information or personnel at the market to assist with purchases of these alternative gifts.

Once again, Holy Comforter’s St. Nicholas Festival will coincide with the Alternative Gift Fair, offering young children the chance to shop for gifts in the “Secret Santa” Shop. Santa’s helpers will be on hand to assist with purchases, wrapping and craft activities while parents can browse the Market downstairs. A special appearance by St. Nicholas himself will round out the festivities. The St. Nicholas Festival will take place from 2:30pm – 5pm Saturday, December 4th.

The Holy Comforter Alternative Gift Fair is part of Holy Comforter’s effort to address the UN Millennium Development Goals, which aim by 2015 to halve the number of people worldwide who are living on less than a dollar a day.
