The coolest Brussel sprouts you'll ever see!

"What in the world is that?"  Bearing more resemblance to a Medieval torture device than a vegetable, it is no wonder people are confused!  Finding Brussel sprouts on the stalk in a grocery store is very rare, although my local Trader Joe's has been carrying them each fall for the past several years.

Take a chance:  buy one if you can.  The first time you bring this strange-looking product home, your family (especially the kids!) will be amazed and intrigued.  And if you prepare it using these easy directions,  the delicious taste will win everyone over.

Snap or cut the individual Brussel sprouts off the stalk.  Remove any wilted or coarse leaves and wash the heads.  If the heads are large, cut in half--otherwise leave them whole.  Place in a sturdy baking dish, drizzle with two tablespoons olive oil, and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and pepper.

Walk into any grocery store these days and you'll be confronted with a dizzying array of apples.  Although available year around, apples especially evoke the essence of fall:  apple harvest, apple cider, apple bobbing, caramel apples, etc.  And why not?  The crisp, sweetness of an apple in the fall makes me think of cooler days, bonfires, and changing leaves.

According to the Virginia State Apple Board (www.virginiaapples.org), Virginia is known for many varieties of apples, including Fuji, Golden Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Winesap, and Rome.  Each variety has its own distinct taste and use, so now is the time of year to experiment!  The tart taste of a Granny Smith apple is completely different from the sweet, juicy Red Delicious apple.

Redskins linebacker, Lorenzo Alexander, brought in his daughter Zoie to show parents how to care for their children’s teeth.  Teaching children good dental habits at a young age reduces the fear of going to the dentist and creates a lifetime of healthy smiles.

The "hidden" snack inside your Halloween pumpkin

If you’re carving up a pumpkin for Halloween, you’ve got a great snack just begging to be made!  The seeds inside the pumpkin are delicious when baked.  Sure you can purchase pumpkin seeds at most grocery stores, but it’s more fun to make your own!

Scoop the seeds from the pumpkin and place in a colander.  Thoroughly wash and remove all the stringy fiber from around the seeds.  This takes time—be patient!  Once cleaned, dab the seeds with a paper towel to remove moisture.

Place the seeds on a flat baking sheet, drizzle with two tablespoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of salt and bake at 350° for 12 to 15 minutes.  The baked seeds will be crispy and delicious.  Eat alone or sprinkle over soups and salads.
