Fourth Old Town Manassas Spring Cleaning Day in April

On Sat., Apr. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Old Town Manassas will host the Fourth Annual Spring Cleaning Day at the Harris Pavilion at 9201 Center Street in Manassas, Va., where attendees can recycle their gently used household items or clothes and donate them to local non-profits, visit recycling and conservation exhibits, and kids can make earth-friendly art projects. The Manassas Art Guild will also be featuring a spring Earth exhibit, where artists showcase their artwork reflecting themes of recycling, natural materials and the environment. 

Spring Cleaning Day will also provide live entertainment from local entertainers, inflatable moon bounces for kids and a special preview of this summer’s Manassas farmer’s market vendors.

Firefighters Check Smoke Alarms, Provide Home Escape Plans

On Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 9 a.m. to noon, firefighters will canvas homes in selected neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County, checking for working smoke alarms, and providing family fire escape plans for residents.

Preparations are well underway at the Dulles Expo Center for this weekend's Capital Home & Garden Show. The show starts this Friday, February 25th and runs through Sunday, February 27th. This marks the 15th Capital Home and Garden Show and show manager, Alyson Caplan, is looking forward to hosting her first spring show after holding a successful fall show this past September. “This is the time of year people are planning spring projects,” said Caplan.

Vienna, VA- Due to the heavy snow storm that occurred on January 26, the Town of Vienna is offering in-town residents a free brush Special Pickup.  In order to receive this one-time brush Special Pickup, residents should place their brush to the curb and call the Special Pickup Hotline at 703-255-5727 by close of business Tuesday, March 1.  Residents can also schedule a Special Pickup online at www.viennava.gov/Town_Services/trash.htm#pickups.

Be Prepared: Recommendations for Your Emergency Supply Kit

Fairfax County urges you to assemble an emergency kit and include these basic items:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps

Each year, the Town of Vienna offers ground leaf mulch and wood mulch to its residents free of charge. Residents may request a mulch delivery between December 1, and the last business day in February for deliveries beginning mid-January.
