VDOT: Roads remain dangerous overnight

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Heavy snow fall, along with heavy traffic and numerous accidents are making clearing the roads in the northern Virginia difficult, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said Saturday afternoon in a press release.

More than 2,400 trucks have been deployed in Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Arlington counties, according to VDOT. The trucks will work through the night to plow and treat roads.

The snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected to last Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

FOUND: Devontae R. Baskin, 24, of Woodbridge

UPDATE: This missing person has been located safely.


WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Prince William County Police Department is searching for a missing 24-year-old man, who was last seen in Fairfax County.

Police are searching for Devontae R. Baskin, 24, of Woodbridge, who was last seen Monday afternoon at the Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax County, according to authorities.

He was last seen at Fair Oaks Mall, according to officials. Baskin may be driving a dark gray Nissan Altima with VA license plates: WPB-8819.

Baskin is believed to be in need of assistance which is why he is considered to be endangered.

He is described as a black man, standing 5'6'' tall, weighing 189 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Baskin was last seen wearing a navy blue button-down shirt and tan pants.

Students interested in attending the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria and Lorton, Va. can audition on Sun., Mar. 1 at MSA Lorton Campus at 9601 Ox Road. Auditions are required as part of the 2015-2016 academy registration. The MSA Academy audition is for performing arts students from 6th grade to 12th grade. Students should call 703-339-0444 ext.3 or visit www.metropolitanarts.org to register for an audition time. 

The audition process will give prospective students an opportunity to demonstrate his or her skills in dance, music and theater for the chairs of the respective arts departments.  Applicants must attend a live audition if they live within three geographical states of MSA.  Prospective students living beyond the three-state radius may submit a DVD audition. 

Dog rescued after falling through ice in Fairfax County

BURKE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Firefighters rescued a dog that fell through thin ice at a lake in Burke, Va. Friday afternoon, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said.

Crews responded to a lake close to Guinea Road in Burke, Va. for the report of a dog that had fallen through the ice around 1:30 p.m.

The owner tried to rescue the one-and-a-half-year-old black Labrador that was about 25 to 30 feet from the shore. The owner was unable to do so due to the cold water, officials said.

Firefighters wearing special suits and gear arrived at the lake and were able to get the dog from the freezing water.

The dog is expected to be fine, according to officials.

Fire officials would like to remind residents of how dangerous it is for anyone to try and go out on the ice.

Vienna 7-Eleven store robber wanted

VIENNA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police Department is searching for a man in connection with robbing employees at a 7-Eleven store in the Vienna area on Friday morning.

The robbery happened at the 7-Eleven store located at 1931 Old Gallows Road around 4:45 a.m., according to police. The suspect went into the store and approached an employee at the register, police said.

The suspect pulled out a handgun and demanded cash. The employee gave the suspect cash and he fled.

The suspect involved is being described as black man, standing about 6'2'' tall and weighing more than 200 pounds. The man had a light complexion, a goatee and sunglasses on. He was wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt, faded blue jeans and black gloves, according to police.

Fairfax County Police release materials on John Geer case

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police have released thousands of pages of materials regarding the John Geer case online.

John Geer, age 46, was unarmed when he was shot and killed in the doorway of his Springfield home.

PFC Adam Torres, an eight-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department, fatally shot Geer on August 29th, 2013, according to police. Police had been responding to a report of a domestic dispute.
